Become a Literacy Volunteers Tutor!
Helping an adult to improve his or her literacy skills can be an extraordinarily rewarding process that has resounding effects on both you and your student for a lifetime. More than reading, writing or mathematics, improved literacy leads to greater self-confidence and employability.

No experience is necessary to become a Literacy Volunteers tutor. We regularly sponsor tutor training workshops that include 12 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of self-guided study exercises. Upon completion, you will be matched with a student based on several factors, including time and location preferences.

Two Simple Commitments
We ask our tutors to make two simple commitments:

•  Complete the tutor training workshop held periodically
•  Meet once a week for 90 minutes with your student for at least one year.

And with these commitments, you will make a difference.

Tutor Training
See the LVWCC Home for upcoming schedule.

The training will include 12 instructional hours in which you will learn appropriate teaching techniques and strategies for adult learners. You’ll experience guest speakers and group games. Specific instruction will be also offered on Teaching English as a Second Language and Getting Reading for the GED.

The training is based on the ProLiteracy Worldwide student-centered approach to learning. After completing the 12-hour training and the 6 hours (on average) of self-guided study exercises, you will become a certified ProLiteracy Worldwide tutor.

Next, you will be matched with one of our adult learners who can meet you at a public library convenient to you both. You may wish to work with an English as a Second Language (ESL) student, a native speaker learning to read or improve his or her reading, writing or mathematics skills, or a GED (General Education Development) student preparing to take the high school equivalency exam.

A $25 fee includes our tutor-training manual and an array of instructional materials, as well as lunch on Saturday. As a grant-funded, non-profit organization which coordinates your tutoring services free-of-charge to the learners, we unfortunately can not also afford to provide your training for free and maintain our primary mission. However, your mileage or other transportation expenses in meeting with your student may be tax deductible.

To reserve a spot in our next training, please call (708)848-8499.

We look forward to meeting you!
